Our Legacy

The Finch family's entry into the funeral business dates back to 1951, when Barney Finch was asked to form a burial insurance company in Cuero, Texas. Ten years later, Barney and his wife Alta, returned to their Gonzales County roots by purchasing half interest in the Mennenga Funeral Home in Nixon. This was in 1961, and their partner in that venture was their son, Don, a graduate of the University of Texas and a licensed mortician.

Over the next ten years, Barney and Don established a reputation for providing caring and friendly funeral service. In a small town such as Nixon, most of the funerals you have are also your friends.  You learn to treat other families like you would want others to treat you.

Eventually Don became the sole owner of Finch Funeral Home. He and his wife Gladyne, settled in Nixon and had two sons. The oldest son, Troy Finch, joined the funeral home staff in 1989. Troy is a graduate of Texas State University and a licensed mortician. Troy's wife, Janet, is also a licensed funeral director.

In 1992, the name of the funeral home was changed to Finch Funeral Chapel of Nixon. At that same time, Don opened Finch Funeral Chapel of La Vernia. Troy and Janet moved to La Vernia to manage it. Troy still makes his home in La Vernia and is active in community affairs. Janet is a full time mom with two children, Trevor and Taylor.

Troy shared his dad's long term vision for providing funeral service. In 1999, he acquired Myers Funeral Home in Stockdale. The name of the funeral home was changed to Finch Funeral Chapel of Stockdale. In 2005, Troy acquired Finch Funeral Chapel of Nixon and Finch Funeral Chapel of La Vernia. On December 1, 2007, Troy acquired Lamprecht-Janssen funeral home in Yorktown and Janssen funeral home in Runge. At this time, all of the funeral homes names were changed to Finch Funeral Chapel, L.L.C. The joint operation of the five funeral homes is the largest funeral concern in Gonzales, Wilson, Dewitt and Karnes counties.

Today, each Finch Chapel location is unique, and the five funeral homes operate under the same principles as Barney and Don Finch established in 1961. "Treat families like you would want them to treat you." This is our guiding principle yesterday, today, and for the future.
