Obituary for Betty Joyce Speer (McKinny)
Betty Joyce (McKinny) Speer went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the age of 81 years, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Stockdale, Texas on November 27, 1934 to Ola Springs McKinny and Elma McKinny. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jack William Speer; daughter, Jacqueline Sue Speer; father, Elma McKinny; mother and Stepfather Ola and Aubrey Terrill; and her grandparents, Ora & Elmer Springs and Leticia and Horry McKinny.
Betty attended school at Sayers and La Vernia and graduated in 1950 from Sam Houston High School in San Antonio. She began her career at Kelly AFB in August, 1950 shortly after graduation. She married Jack William Speer in 1953. She continued her job at Kelly, then Brooks AFB until 1956 when she decided to become a stay at home mom. After giving birth to three girls she returned to Kelly AFB in 1961. Shortly thereafter she was accepted into a trainee program in the Production Control Division, Maintenance Directorate at Kelly where she eventually became known for her expertise in work-loading, and was one of the first two highest grade female Production Controllers in the Maintenance Directorate. She was later promoted to Budget Analyst, managing funds for the entire Maintenance Directorate. After retiring from Kelly in 1979, she started her own business making wedding cakes and selling Tupperware in her spare time. Betty served several years as Secretary of the Administrative Council, Parita United Methodist Church. She was a member of Nekodah Temple #44, Daughters of the Nile, a member at large of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and was an organizing member of Susanna Dickinson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Betty is survived by two daughters Betty (Betsy) Ann Keller and husband Steve, and Vicki Lynn Gann and husband Donald; four grandchildren, Katie (Keller) Russell and husband Justin, Kristen (Keller) Hohn and husband Josh, Kory Gann and wife Whitney, and Kody Gann and wife Olivia; six great grandchildren, Bryce, Jordyn, Trent, Jiliana, Samuel and Henry; sister, Gladys Scruggs and husband Jimmie; numerous nieces and nephews as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ana Martinez for her loving and compassionate care of our Mother and Grandmother.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Finch Funeral Chapel, La Vernia.
