Air Support Vietnam

I can remember a memory my father in law, Cecil Ford, told many times about he and Gill's time in Vietnam. He said they were out on the river and got in a tight spot and their boat was taking enemy fire from all sides. Gill was trying to give the pilot the authentification codes for air support but the pilot kept saying those are the wrong codes. Finally Gill said,"listen d--- it. Do you know where the Ben Luc bridge is?". The pilot responded that he did. Gill said,"well follow the river till you see a boat in the water taking fire on all sides, then shoot everything but the boat." Quickly air support arrived and suppressed the enemy fire. I don't remember my father in law ever speaking about Vietnam without mentioning Gill. My wife and I had such a wonderful visit with Gill and his son. He told us so many things about their time in Vietnam. He was truly a great friend to my father in law and we were blessed to have met him. He will be sorely missed. ~ William Maxwell
