Obituary for Jeannine Ann Sample (Marquis)

Jeannine Ann Sample (Marquis)
Jeannine Marquis Sample, age 87, of Smiley, Texas, passed away April 4, 2018. Jeannine was born in Cuero, Texas on February 28, 1931, as the second of two children born to Charles W. and Jeanette Casal Marquis.

Jeannine started singing at an early age. Her mother, also an accomplished musician, helped her excel and develop her beautiful voice.

Jeannine graduated from Cuero High School in 1949 where she was an active band member. After graduation, she attended Texas State University. She met the love of her life, Elmo Alex Sample, on a blind date. They fell in love and married on October 7, 1951. One year later, their first child, Charlotte Jean, was born. Later, John Alex came in 1954 and eight years after, in 1962, came Merilyn Gay.

Jeannine was baptized on April 29, 1956, in the First Baptist Church in Smiley. She became choir director, and she, Elmo and Charlotte sang many specials there and in other churches in the area. She later attended the First United Methodist Church in Smiley.

She was always so proud of her children – Charlotte, mother and teacher; John, rancher and pilot; and Merilyn, outdoors woman and fabulous cook. In 1982, Jeannine became a grandmother to Joey and in 1985 to Chad. These two young men have been an inspiration to their “Meme”. Her greatest joy was cooking and baking their favorites and making Big Red floats.

Jeannine is survived by her loving family: husband, Elmo Sample; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Trey McMahon of Nixon; son, John Sample of Gonzales; son-in-law, Kennon Cantley of Smiley; grandson, Joseph (Joey) and Kellie Taylor of San Antonio and great-granddaughters, Ella and Olivia; grandson, Chad and Brittany Taylor of San Antonio and great-grandson, Brooks; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Merilyn Cantley; brother and sister-in-law, Charles “Chick” and Mary Lou Marquis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in law: Carl and Annette Sample and Horace and Bernice Sample.

The Visitation will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon. The Service will then follow with The Rev. Harlene Sadler officiating. Interment will follow in Bundick Cemetery in Smiley. Pallbearers: Carl Sample, Brian Sample, Layton Sample, Cole Sample, Ken Sample, Reilly Sample. Honorary Pallbearers: Tai Apisa, Eros Bertonie, Mac Morris, and Jeff Novak.
